Francesco Molinari

Italy

Became the first Italian to be crowned European Tour Number One when he topped the 2018 Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex, following a stunning season which included a maiden Major victory at The 147th Open Championship. That triumph at Carnoustie Golf Links, when he played in the penultimate group alongside Tiger Woods, also made him the first Italian to win a Major Championship title. Played starring role in The 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, when he claimed five points out of five - four of them alongside close friend Tommy Fleetwood - before sealing the winning point against Phil Mickelson in the Sunday Singles. He became only European player in history to earn five points from five matches. Claimed his maiden victory in his second season on the European Tour, becoming the first Italian for more than 25 years to win the Italian Open in 2006. The younger brother of fellow professional Edoardo, they memorably teamed up in The 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, a year after winning the World Cup of Golf together for Italy in 2009. Molinari also sealed the half point which secured victory at the Miracle at Medinah in The 2012 Ryder Cup, in the final match against Woods (Europe had already retained the Cup courtesy of Martin Kaymer's win over Steve Stricker). Won his first Rolex Series title at the 2018 BMW PGA Championship, overcoming Rory McIlroy in the final group, one year after finishing runner-up at Wentworth Club. Following his success at Wentworth, Molinari secured his first PGA TOUR title with victory at the 2018 Quicken Loans National when he finished on 21 under par, eight shots clear of the chasing pack. Secured his third PGA TOUR victory at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Captained Continental Europe to victory in the inaugural Hero Cup in 2023. A glittering amateur career featured two Italian Amateur Stroke Play victories and a 2004 triumph in the Italian Match Play. Now London-based, he has adopted West Ham as his team of choice in the UK’s capital while also supporting Inter Milan.
