Born in Barcelona, he started golf aged five under the tutelage of his mother, then a scratch handicapper. Helped his brother Alejandro to Amateur Championship victory, acting as his caddie in 2002. He attended high school in the United States, returned home in 2002 and worked on his family’s fish farm for two years to understand the value of money before eventually turning pro in 2004. Finished sixth at Qualifying School in 2007 to earn his card for the following season and won his first title at the Open de France. He went on to finish 18th on the Order of Merit and earned the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award for 2008. Defeated compatriot Sergio Garcia in a play-off to win the BMW International Open in 2011 but had to wait three years for his next victory which came at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, finishing one stroke ahead of Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson. Won his second BMW International Open title in 2015 and then endured a four-and-a-half-year trophy drought. Started the final round of the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Championship three strokes ahead but had to contend with painful blisters, barely being able to walk. Held on for a one stroke victory as he recorded his fifth victory. Won twice in the space of four starts in 2022 as he claimed the MyGolfLife Open hosted by Pecanwood and then won his first title on home soil at the ISPS HANDA Championship in Spain. Then, in 2023, he won twice in three starts as he triumphed at the Korea Championship presented by Genesis and then claimed his ninth DP World Tour title at the KLM Open a month later.
